Adult male tigers eat blind cubs

On average, tigress gives birth to 3 cubs after about 93 to 112 days of gestation. The cubs are born blind. Hence, they depend on their mom’s scent to ensure they are fed and protected.

Each tiger has a unique scent owing to the present of odoriferous gland on specific parts of the body, such as the tail, anus, lips and the region between the toes. That is how the blind cubs recognise their mom.

They may not be able to survive if get left behind on hunts. Therefore, they depend on their mom greatly. Since tigress has a short fertile window of only 4 to 5 days in a year, to ensure fertilisation, mom has to be focused. That is the reason the adult male tigers may eat blind cubs to ensure their mom can focus in courtship.

White tigers and black tigers are real

White tigers and black tigers are not a separate subspecies of tiger. They are just a genetic phenomenon.

Many people thought that white tigers are albino, but they are not. Instead, they are inbreeding of 2 Bengal tigers who carry a recessive gene controlling coat colour. It ended up producing offsprings that have no orange-brown colour. But, it still has the black stripes.

The black tigers are due to pseudo-melanism. The gene’s phenotypic effect produced thick black stripes, that is so close together, that the orange-brown background is barely visible between stripes. From a distance, a black tiger can be easily mistaken as a black jaguar or black panther.

White tigers and black tigers are getting more common due to inbreeding, of course with monetary drives. Inbreeding concentrate some life-altering complications to the subsequent generation. Also, the neonatal mortality rate is very high. Thus, it is not something we should do just for commercial value. Although the Association of Zoos and Aquariums banning member of zoos from breeding these tigers, they can’t stop some private zoos, roadside attractions and traveling exhibits from displaying them.
